Taken for Active Assignment Weekly. This week's assignment: My Favorite [sic] Beverage

The assignment is very straightforward: Take a shot of your favorite beverage. This could be wine,beer,shots,water....whatever. The goal is to take a shot that would look good as an advertisement for that beverage.

Helle V had a classic in the AAW group if you need some inspiration:

There are tons of examples on flickr of great beverage shots, so it should be easy to get inspiration.

Restrictions: Try not to take a macro shot of the beverage, i.e. a close-up of a splash as it is being poured. Try to include the whole bottle, glass, etc..

Dare: None. No dare this week, simply get creative and make an awesome beverage image.

What it took: I was inspired by Max Wilde's photo of spilt milk. Max had a puddle of milk, but what if the puddle could be made to look like a bottle? Despite all the wonderful flavours in manufactured beverages, regular, normal, pure water has to be my all-time favourite beverage.

The background is a piece of dark blue cardboard with a sheet on glass on top. The water bottle and the drops are formed out of babyoil (it stays put longer than water). I used an eyedropper to place the oil but kept getting air bubbles, so had to "flatten" the oil with a finger (I kept telling myself left hand for arranging oil, right hand for touching camera). The ice cubes are made of plastic and bought in a nearby theater prop-shop. The only thing that is "real" is the label, and it's stuck to a small piece of cardboard to make it last longer before it got completely soaked in oil.

Lighting the set was a pain. I ended up with a bed sheet as difuser hung about 2m in front of the set and an SB-800 flash behind it. I fired the flash using Nikon's wireless AWL using another camera-mounted SB-800 with the head twisted away from the set. But I was still getting reflections of the camera and an overhead lamp. In the end, I placed a piece of cardboard along each side and took another piece of cardboard, cut a hole just big enough for the lens to go through, and placed it over the set as a "roof". That finally removed the unwanted reflections.

The edges ofthe bototle is are a bit rough. Some might think that's a flaw. However, obviously, that's deliberate and part of my artistic license ;-)
