Note: this photo was published in an Apr 8, 2010 Mexican blog titled Podcast #42: Maternidad sobreinformada." It was also published in a May 27, 2010 blog titled "Strategies for the Work-Bound Stay-At-Home-Moms (and Dads)." Moving into 2011, the photo was published in a Feb 6, 2011 blog titled "The top 5 benefits of being a work at home mom."

This was taken on the east side of Broadway, between 86th and 87th Street. I thought it was intriguing that the woman was concentrating so completely on whatever she was reading, while absently patting her baby -- who looked like it was desperately trying to reach the bottle of milk that was just a little too far.

I stopped in front of them, and took a good 10-15 seconds to frame and focus the shot. The mother didn't notice me at all...

So I've learned to keep the camera switched on (which contradicts my traditional urge to conserve battery power), and not worry so much about zooming in for a perfectly-framed picture ... after all, once the digital image is uploaded to my computer, it's pretty trivial to crop out the parts unrelated to the main subject.

For the most part, I've deliberately avoided photographing bums, drunks, drunks, and crazy people. There are a few of them around, and they would certainly create some dramatic pictures; but they generally don't want to be photographed, and I don't want to feel like I'm taking advantage of them. I'm still looking for opportunities to take some "sympathetic" pictures of such people, which might inspire others to reach out and help them. We'll see how it goes ...

The only other thing I've noticed, thus far, is that while there are lots of interesting people to photograph, there are far, far, *far* more people who are *not* so interesting. They're probably fine people, and they might even be more interesting than the ones I've photographed ... but there was just nothing memorable about them.

This was taken at a children's playground on Amsterday Avenue and 77th Street, where a water sprinkler was keeping several young children cool and wet in the hot summer afternoon...

Dragon

A dragon fly we found shortly after it expired. We found it a week or so ago and examined it closely in the microscope. It has since dried out completely and I decided to use it as a test subject for a macro studio setup I plan to use to shoot Tammy's baby booties.

The setup is a pane of glass (from a photo frame) laid on a piece of posterboard. The posterboard is taped to the wall behind th table then curved gently onto the table so it serves as a full seamless backdrop, plus its far enough away from the subject it can be out focus and lit separately. Lighting is from a household CFL in a hardware store reflector and a single Canon flash. Both are aimed at large light panels (PVC and white newsprint paper) to enlarge the lights and act as a softbox.

I need to replace the newsprint with tracing paper or a translucent fabric and replace the CFL lamp with a second flash with full manual capabilities. This was all stuff that was on hand.

Once I was in a mart down in Paris. I was shooting polas. I was trying to frame some subject but nothing was that good to shoot at. So while I was standing there wondering, there was this bunch of kids coming towards me. And then I thought: the greatest gift I can do to this future digital babies is let them see what emotion is watching your camera spitting out a photo with great noise of cogs. So I held my camera up and shot. They stayed mouth open in front of me while I went away smiling.

Please save the polaroid film.

Anyone who takes this photo in his hand always wants to turn it upside-down... is my point of view so hard to see?

I had this idea. dcoombs had this idea. Without speaking, we both had this idea. :-) However, *I* can get closer! However, try to imagine how hot the lens + filter were getting after a very short time. Had to make it quick! :-D

Any have any idea what these flowers are called?

(These photos were taken at this Rose Garden that I came across at Hyde Park in London. It had the prettiest flowers I had ever seen. It wasn't even a nicely kept garden, it was almost like a messy room...but that's what made it beautiful.)

My elder brother had a baby-boy born on November 15, 2008. A new addition to the family in 32 years. His name is Kartikeya (Hindu God of War). He was 13 days old when I took this photo. I affectionately call him "Gundu". God Bless you kiddo.
