Baby Snapping Turtle ~ 2 of 3 photos

Continued from last photo...
Luckily I had just barely missed stepping on it! What was it doing out so late in the season?
After bringing it about 2 blocks closer to the river's edge only a few inches away, I went home and researched on the Internet. I also contacted 2 experts on Snapping Turtles, one in the next county over from mine.
Seems our extremely mild winter tricked this 3 month old into leaving the nest. I actually had seen a huge snapping turtle right in the prairie during July or August . She was laying eggs on higher ground.
Baby turtles either overwinter in the nest, or crawl a long long way to get to the water, and hibernate out winter in the mud under the water. Enough Oxygen is trapped within to sustain them as bodily functions slow down to nearly nothing.
