The village we visited consisted of 5,000 people, of which 1,700 were orphans. The countryside of Haiti looks mostly like this picture, and I can assure you that seeing children dying on the side of the road is much different than watching "Save the Children" commercials from the comfort of your air conditioned living room. People have been reduced to eating mud cakes - literally, dried mud - just to keep their bellies full, despite the lack of nutrition and the potential for disease and parasites.
I apologize if this comes across preachy, but experiencing something like this firsthand really shakes you out of your comfort zone.
